Rose Clothes Hanger

There’s really not a lot of sewing involved in this project but these hangers look so pretty and make such a lovely gift that I thought it would be nice to show you how easy they are to produce.
Any bride would be thrilled to have such a special hanger on which to hang her gown.

You will need:
  • Coat hangers – choose the traditionally shaped variety in plastic or wood
  • Satin and sheer fabric
  • 50cm per hanger of green ribbon (2-3cm wide) to make the rose leaves and 50cm of narrow ribbon to loop into a bunch.
  • Polyester wadding
  • Pearl beads or sequins
  • Sewing thread

Method:
1.Cut two rectangles 35cm x 30cm of satin. Cut the same in sheer fabric or lace and layer on top of the satin to achieve a two-tone effect.

2. With the right side of fabric facing up, fold together the long edges. Sew around one short edge and the long edge. This will form a long thin bag that will cover half of your hanger. Turn it right side out.

3. Repeat with other half.

4. Cut wadding in strips approx. 6-8cm wide.

5. Wrap the wadding around the hanger and hand-sew the strips together as you go. Continue until the hanger is totally covered.

6. Slip one half of the satin cover over the hanger. Don’t worry if it seems too large at this stage, the extra fabric will be gathered to give the hanger its plump rich look.

7. Starting at one end of the hanger, position the seam at the under side and fold the ends in as if you were wrapping a parcel. Using a matching thread, sew the fabric to the wadding. Pass the needle through the wadding and pull it through about 2.5cm (1”) from your last stitch gathering the fabric a small amount as you go. Work steadily in this way along the hanger towards the centre. Tip: It is a good idea to pin the raw edge of your cover to the centre of the hanger; leave about a 1cm allowance so the edges can be turned in to give a neat finish.

8. Repeat with the other half of the cover joining the two halves in the centre of the hanger.

For Decoration:
1. To make the roses you will need to cut strips of sheer fabric 4-8cm wide across the bias. The wider the strip, the bigger the finished rose will be, so vary the widths to give a more natural look to the roses.

2. Fold the strip in half and fold one end in to make the centre of the rose. Now wrap the fabric around to form a spiral. Sew the ends together as you go. As you wind the fabric you will see a beautiful rose is forming. When you feel your rose is large enough cut the surplus fabric off and tuck in the end of the fabric and sew down.
Continue until you have five or six roses for each hanger.

3. To make the rose leaves, cut a length of green ribbon 5-6cm long, fold in the cut edges to form a triangle fold in the edges again to form a leaf shape.

4. Loop the narrow ribbon to form a bunch and sew together.

5. Arrange the roses, leaves and bunch of ribbon and sew to the hanger.

6. Sew a few pearl beads or sequins into the folds on the fabric.

Told you it was easy!
